STREAMLINE Hazlehead's bid for volleyball honours in the second half
of the season has been strengthened by the arrival of a Czechoslovak
player.
Marketta Riedlova, who is working as an au pair in the Aberdeen area
for the next six months, has been cleared to play in the Royal Bank
Scottish League. Having played in the Czech first division with VSC
Zlin, she has experience of a higher level which should rub off on the
club's young players.
Hazlehead lie fourth in the women's first division at halfway and have
an outside chance of the title, although probably it will be a straight
fight between unbeaten leaders Team Components Bureau and champions
Glasgow Powerhouse.
Riedlova, after clearance from the International Volleyball Federation
(FIVB), played in the
10-15, 10-15, 8-15 defeat by Powerhouse in Aberdeen earlier this month
but is still finding her feet in the Scottish game. Her influence should
become noticeable in the second half of the season.
However, the Scottish Cup may be a better bet. Hazlehead are through
to the last eight of the competition but are in the same half of the
draw as Team Components Bureau. Hazlehead did, however, take two sets
off the Whitburn side in Aberdeen earlier in the season and will hope
that they can pull off a shock if the teams meet in the later stages of
the cup.
The leaders themselves have threatened to bring in a couple of foreign
players for the second half of the season, although they have not yet
approached the Scottish Volleyball Association to obtain clearance.
Glasgow Powerhouse plan additional training sessions over the festive
period to ensure their challenge does not wilt.
Su Ragazzi lead the men's league at halfway and their return meeting
with champions West Coast is likely to be the most significant fixture
in the second half of the season, although Jets cannot be discounted.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
