WORK to stabilise a tunnel on the Rodwell Trail is complete – just in time for Easter.

The repairs and work to stabilise the slope and re-open a footpath next to the Wyke Road tunnel in Weymouth is now complete.

The project, which was jointly-funded by both Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and Dorset County Council, was undertaken in two parts.

The first phase of the work included repairing and anchoring the east wing wall of the Wyke Road Tunnel and stabilisingt of the upper slope – this was finished in December.

The second phase, which has just been completed, involved stabilising the lower slope and reinstating the footpath from Wyke Road to the Rodwell Trail.

The trail and Wyke Road tunnel remained open during the work, but a small section of the trail was reduced and cordoned off for the site.

Consulting engineer company Aspley Associates did the design and contractors Westpointe Limited and H C Lewis carried out the works.

David Brown spokesman for assests and infrastructure at the borough council said: “We are delighted to have the linked footpath from Wyke Road reopened ready for Easter weekend.

“The Rodwell Trail is a vital link for many residents and visitors to the borough and the stabilisation of the wing wall will ensure the route remains safe and enjoyable for the thousands who use it.

“We aimed to minimise the disruption while the works were taking place and would like to thank residents and users for their patience whilst the work took place.”
