A 23-YEAR-OLD woman has been killed in a road traffic collision near Dorchester on Saturday night.

Police were alerted to a single vehicle road traffic collision on Revels Hill on the Old Sherborne Road at around 9.45pm.

They discovered a black Nissan Primera had left the carriageway and come to rest in the hedgerow.

It is believed no other vehicles were involved in the incident and the 23-year-old woman was the sole occupant on the car, which appeared to be travelling towards Sherborne.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “Sadly the female was pronounced dead at the scene and her immediate family have been notified of her death.”

Local district councillor Jacqui Cuff said she was deeply saddened to hear of the young woman’s death on the road and her heart went out to the woman’s family.

She said: “It’s just awful, really tragic.

“I can’t help but think of the girl’s family and her friends.”

County councillor for the area Jill Haynes said she was also sad to see another death on Dorset’s roads.

She said: “It’s very sad and one of the things we do have in Dorset is we have a problem with too many deaths on our rural roads.

“What we do to resolve that I just don’t know.”

Cllr Haynes added: “It’s terribly sad and my condolences go to her family.”

In February 2008 student nurse Alison Graff, 26, died when her Peugoet 205 was involved in a crash with a Nissan Primera on the C12 Old Sherborne Road near Cerne Abbas.

Three Polish passengers in the Nissan also died.

Another fatal collision occurred on the stretch of road two years earlier when 18-year-old James Hayter’s car crashed into a tree, killing the young driver and fatally injuring his father Ivor.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision on Saturday night or who saw the vehicle around the time of the incident to contact them.

A force spokesman said: “Any witnesses to the collision or to the manner of driving of the black Nissan Primera prior to the collision are asked to contact Dorset Police on 101, quoting incident number 18:462.”

The investigating officer is PC 1855 Todd from the Weymouth traffic department.
