WEYMOUTH College looks to be heading in the right direction following its latest Ofsted inspection.

The college was rated inadequate following an inspection earlier this year due to a financial crisis and failures by previous leaders to deal with problems.

Former principal Liz Myles was criticised for 'ill considered' strategic decisions which impacted on the finances.

Ofsted inspectors have since returned for a follow-up check and have indicated the college is making good progress.

The report said: “The senior leadership team has been prompt in drawing up a series of actions and priorities aimed at addressing those weaknesses identified at inspection, and incorporating them into the corporate quality improvement plans.

“In addition, sector area managers have used information from the inspection to update subject level improvement plans. The plans demonstrate a clear understanding and acceptance by all managers and governors of the need to remedy weaknesses, to ensure the longer-term viability of the college and maintain high standards.”

Nigel Evans, acting principal, said: “There were no surprises in it for us. We read it as more of the same please, they’ve seen we have made the improvements and are saying the college must continue to make improvements.”

The college will now face a further inspection in June or July where it will receive a new rating from Ofsted.

Mr Evans has been pleased with the response from staff since the initial report came out.

He said: “It was obviously a big blow for them. We are in a different place now, morale is much higher. We’re working really hard to get everything right.”

The college has reported an improving and more certain financial position since the appointment of an interim vice principal for finance and business planning.

The report did though highlight areas where the college can still improve.

It said: "Governors should maintain a very close overview of improvement activities, ensuring leaders and managers receive suitable support and challenge, and hold them to account to address fully those actions identified in the improvement plan."

The report also stated that senior leaders should ensure they 'maintain the positive determination of staff' and also 'regularly review progress against the post-inspection action plan.'

The college is now focusing on breaking even in its 2015/16 budget and ensuring students get good results.

Mr Evans said: “At the minute what we are really focusing on is the academic success of our students and everybody on our courses coming out with their qualifications.”
