COMPETITORS defied the rain to set their mark at this year’s Dorset Knob Throwing and Frome Valley Food Festival.

The popular event, held at Cattistock, took place for the eighth time yesterday and was expected to attract thousands of visitors throughout the day.

Those in attendance appeared to be in good spirits, making light of the many innuendos and puns attached to the event.

The festival involves participants throwing a Dorset Knob biscuit, created by local bakers Moores.

In addition to Moores, this year’s festival was supported by Dorset Tea, Dorset Food & Drink and the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) partnership.

Participants were given a Knobalthon score card on the day and were encouraged to take part in five whacky games, such as guess the weight of the big Knob, Knob darts, and the famous Knob Throwing event.

Competitors were allowed to have three knobs per go, with the furthest throw then measured.

Rules dictate the biscuits can only be thrown using an underarm throw and one foot must remain on the ground during the process.

If the biscuit breaks upon landing, it is the umpire’s decision as to its final resting place.

Other games included, Knob or no Knob, the Knob and Spoon races, and Knob eating contest.

The winning of the Knob Throwing event gets to keep their biscuit and receives a plaque. Their name will also be added to a board in the village hall.

The event ran alongside the Frome Valley Food Festival, giving visitors the chance to sample and purchase a range of foods including breads, cheeses, poultry and wine.

There were more than 70 local food producers at this year’s event, offering a range of local produce.

The festival, which took place on the football field, raises much needed funds for the playing fields, Savill Hall, the cricket club and the Maiden Newton and Cattistock Football Club.

Glenn Chadwick, travelling from Portland, attended the festival for the first time.

He said: “It was very well attended despite the pretty poor weather. I was very impressed.

“The food was excellent. The people were excellent. I couldn’t fault it.

“I wish the organisers all the best, certainly as it’s all for charity. It’s great to see.”
