THIS Friday sees the beginning of commemoration events to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day - and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) is urging residents to ensure celebrations are safe.

Many local communities are planning to hold their own events, some include fire hazards such as fireworks, bonfires and beacons.

DFRS is providing safety advice for any one taking part in VE Day celebrations to ensure the events go off without a hitch.

Station manager Paul Ticehurst said: “The 70th anniversary of VE day is a great opportunity for families and communities to celebrate. Dorset Fire and Rescue Service is keen to support any celebrations and activities in the community but we want residents and visitors to consider their safety when celebrating.

He added: “If you are having a party involving fireworks, consider that they must be stored safely, in a closed box, somewhere cool and dry, out of reach of children and animals, until the time they are needed. Be considerate to your neighbours: warn them beforehand so they can take in their washing, close windows, keep their pets indoors and, if necessary, take other precautions and only buy fireworks from reputable dealers. The fireworks should have the product safety marking BS7114 or equivalent and carry a CE mark.

If events involve a bonfire or beacon, please inform Dorset fire control on 01305 753166 prior to lighting your fire to prevent us from attending an unwanted call.

Bonfires should be built well clear of buildings, roads, garden sheds, fences, trees and hedges and, if possible, choose somewhere sheltered from wind to minimise the risk of the bonfire being blown out of control or of smoke restricting the vision of road users. Always keep a bucket of water or a working hosepipe nearby in case of fire.

Never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire and never throw on fireworks or burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries.

Whilst DFRS says it does not want to discourage celebrations, it wants everyone to remain safe during this period and prevent them from any injury or damage to property. Dorset Fire and Rescue also offer advice to individuals in the form of a free home fire safety check.
