A SPONSORED dog walk to raise money for abandoned animals will take place in west Dorset next weekend.

The event is being organised by a Beaminster couple in aid of a shelter for abandoned dogs and cats on the Greek island of Skiathos on Sunday, May 17.

Led for the past 20 years by Sue and David Wells, the four-mile walk around Netherbury starts and finishes for refreshments at the Hare and Hounds Inn, Waytown. Walkers and their dogs are invited to join the leisurely stroll which starts at 10.30am.

Sue said: "People's generosity over the years has enabled us to provide Skiathos Friends of the Animals with thousands of pounds to help fund the shelter.

"Last year we were able to take around £1,500 to the shelter - together with animal needs such as collars, leads and veterinary products."

The charity provides vet treatment and neutering - and has been successful in rehoming dogs and puppies in England and countries across Europe.
