THE LIVES of those lost at sea will be remembered in Lyme Regis this weekend in a traditional ceremony.

The Lyme Regis Lifeboat traditionally holds a Blessing of the Boats family service annually on Rogation Sunday.

The service takes place outside the boathouse at the town’s iconic Cobb and will begin at 3pm this year this Sunday, May 10.

Wreaths are blessed and taken out to sea by the lifeboat crew, where they are then laid to commemorate those lost at sea.

Organisers say everyone is more than welcome to attend the event. There will also be music from the Lyme Regis Town Band.

The traditional ceremony has proved popular over the years, with more than 200 people attending the event in 2013.

Last year, the open-air service was led by the Reverend Jane Skinner, who spoke of Lyme’s history in maritime activities.

She also spoke on the storms of the past winter and the damage they caused on the Cobb, saying this was a reminder of the dangers of the sea.
