STAY safe on the Jurassic Coast this bank holiday weekend. That's the message from West Dorset District Council which is encouraging people to take care when walking near cliffs.

It comes after a 50-yard long crack appeared in the cliff near the coastal path at West Bay.

The crack, which is about two-foot wide in places and above the promenade, has appeared on what is an unstable section of the Jurassic Coast, with a number of large rock falls and landslides occurring in recent years.

The council says people enjoying the Jurassic Coast should follow the guidance of safety warning signs, keeping away from cliff edges and following the coastal paths set out.

Those walking along beaches should avoid going directly under the bases of the cliffs and keep a close eye on the tide to avoid getting cut off.

Cllr Anthony Alford, Leader of West Dorset District Council said: “There’s no doubt West Dorset is a fantastic place to visit.

“I’d like to encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings when enjoying the coast this bank holiday weekend and summer.

“If you’re thinking about visiting our amazing Jurassic Coastline please make sure you stay safe by keeping to footpaths and taking notice of warning signs at all times.”
