FOOTBALL legend Denis Law will be visiting Weymouth as part of a fundraising event for a local charity.

The former Manchester United centre forward, who scored 171 goals in 309 appearances for the Red Devils, will pitch up at Redlands Community Sports Hub on July 12 as part of a fundraising event held for Meningitis Now.

Organised by local mum Naomi Patterson, a committed fundraiser for the charity, the day will see a match between Weymouth Old Boys, managed by Brendan King and a Dorchester United Old Boys with the winners scooping the George Patterson trophy, which was launched in honour of Naomi’s eight-year-old son George.

George was diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis a week before his first birthday. and Since then, he has been left with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, scoliosis, gastrostomy and a loss of vision is his right eye. He is also peg fed, deaf and needs round-the-clock care.

Law, who also played for Manchester City, Huddersfield and Italian team Torino and also bagged 30 goals in 55 appearances for Scotland, will attend the football match and will also host a charity auction in the evening where he will auction of some football memorabilia.

Speaking of the star striker attending the event, Mrs Patterson said: “He is such a lovely bloke, and has done a lot of work for the charity after his son was diagnosed with the condition.

“It was organised through the charity’s founder, Steve Dayman, and he asked Denis to come down and he said yes which is great. He’s helped us out before by donating a picture of him, Bobby Charlton and George Best which we auctioned off, so it will be great to have him down here.”

Along with the charity football match, There will also be a football memorabilia auction, refreshments and live music throughout the dayand Mrs Patterson said she hoped a lot of money would be raised throughout the day.

She added: “We held an old boys' match in November and it went really well, we raised about £5,000 for the charity.

“I’m really looking forward to the day, it’s going to be great and hopefully we can raise a lot of money.”
