CHILDREN enjoyed a host of hands on learning experiences as an array of visitors came in for St Osmund's Middle School's PHSCE Day.

Year Six pupils spent the day focusing on the media and got the chance to take on the role of newspaper reporters with the Echo's Dorchester reporter Harry Hogger.

The youngsters penned their own eye-catching headlines and dramatic news stories after getting to the bottom of the story through a series of probing questions.

The children also had a session with a local radio station and worked on advertising and promoting their own sports day.

Year Six pupil Lily Childs said she had enjoyed the day looking at various areas of the media industry.

She said: "It was fun to make our television adverts and learning about the media, it's a new experience."

PHSCE co-ordinator Paul Absolom said that Year Seven students were treated to a production from a theatre and education group tackling drug issues and followed that up with a drama workshop.

They also did taekwondo and self-defence and the school put on in-hours life saving courses looking at CPR and basic first aid.

For Year Eight pupils there was a session looking at legal and illegal drugs with Dorset and they also spent time looking at homelessness.

In the afternoon they had a talk from a representative of the Prison Service.

The theme of the day for Year Five pupils was safety as they followed up a visit to the Safewise charity at the Weymouth Community Fire Station with the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.

They also headed outside for a beach safety session with RNLI lifeguards, who offered tips on keeping safe in and out of the water.

Mr Absolom said the PHSCE Day has been running for around ten years and was a good way of making an impact on the children through different learning experiences.

He said: "It's a big event on our curriculum calendar."

Mr Absolom thanked all the various representatives from outside organisations who had helped make the day a success.

He said: "We are very lucky we have got a lot of very good guests that come in and work with us in the school.

"It makes it a bit more relevant and a bit special."
