HISTORIC England does not approve of an application to replace badly decayed timber scrolls and posts on the Cancer Research UK shop in East Street, Bridport.

Jacqueline Martinez, assistant inspector of Historic Buildings said: "A previous application for similar works to 9 East Street proposed the restoration of the parapet feature to the front elevation of this building. We are disappointed to see that

these proposals appear to have moved on from restoration, and are now suggesting that complete replacement is required.

"We are unable to support an application for complete replacement. The parapet is an important and distinctive

feature."

But Cancer Research said having removed the scrolls it was found they were beyond repair.

In a statement it said: "The existing parapet, which includes ornate, carved timber scrolls, finials and posts, is in poor condition and now requires complete replacement. The parapet has been carefully removed from the property due to structural instability, and is currently safely stored off-site awaiting reconstruction.

"Listed Building Consent to partially reconstruct the parapet and repair the ornate, carved timber scrolls, finials and posts, was granted on the 13 November 2014. However, following further investigations, the existing scrolls, finials and posts were found to be decayed beyond repair."

Bridport Town Councillors discussed the application at their plans meeting on Monday (June 29)and suggested Historic England should send someone to look at the scrolls.

Committee chairman Sarah Williams said: "If they want more evidence that it is unrepairable someone from Historic England should come and look.

"If they can't be restored a replica would be the best option."

Members aid they understood the concerns but had no objections to the application to replace like for like.
