A GROUP of friends from Dorchester have shown their stamina whilst raising more than £200 for charity.

Friends of Dorchester teenager Rian Harvey turned out for a 12-hour football match earlier this month to raise funds for the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton Hospital.

The event was organised as a show of solidarity for 16-year-old Rian, who has received treatment at the ward.

Rian is currently receiving treatment in London but the Piam Brown Ward is where he has undergone much of his previous treatment.

Cameron Dabbs, who helped organise the event, said all those taking part knew the Thomas Hardye School pupil and wanted to do something charitable in his name.

A total of 31 players graced the pitch at Dorchester Sports Centre throughout the day, playing their part in a game that finished 73-69.

Players that completed the full 12 hours included Cameron Dabbs, Jordan King, Billy Evans, Josh Lucas, Chris Clarke, Kieran Knight and Julian Dale.

The group raised £280 on the day and money is still coming in. Cameron said they would like to raise £400 and hand over the sum when they visit the ward later this year.

He said: “It was a great event and all ages participated and gave there all.

“I would like to thank everyone who made the day that special, especially at 9pm where most of us collapsed in exhaustion, and family and friends who were there to help.

“Everyone was involved and keen to participate from the moment I suggested it. I hope to build on this year’s success and improve the event for next year, and hopefully push for 24 hours or even longer if given the opportunity.”

Rian was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in September 2013.

He underwent several months of treatment, which included intensive chemotherapy, and entered remission in March last year.

During his time in hospital, he received support from the Steve Charles Help a Friend Fund.

He gave back to the community last Christmas when he gave gifts to children at Dorset County Hospital’s Kingfisher Ward. With support from the Help a Friend Fund, Rian helped raise more than £2,500.

Rian is sadly receiving further treatment following a relapse but he is continuing to raise money for young people on the Kingfisher Ward.
