A BUNCH of fitness enthusiasts laced up their trainers and reset their stopwatches for an extra special Weymouth Park Run through Lodmoor Country Park.

Last Saturday marked a milestone occasion for the run’s organisers, as they celebrated their 100th run.

The weekly run first launched in 2013 in a bid to boost fitness in the local community and hundreds of runners now run five kilometres through the park every Saturday morning.

Last Saturday more than 300 runners joined together for the milestone run, which also boasted a whole host of entertainment and incentives for the runners.

Event co-ordinator Michael Wilkinson said the run was even joined by runners from Cape Town in South Africa.

He added: “Weymouth Park Run brings the country park alive by bringing lots of friendly people together to start the weekend off.

“Runners age from six to 70 and the runs are organised by a team of 15 committed volunteers who give up their time every Saturday morning.”

Michael said the volunteers that turn out every Saturday try to make every runner, at whatever pace they are going at, to feel as if they are achieving their personal goals.

He added hat the organises wanted to thank all those who had supported the weekly events.

Michael said: “We want to say a massive thank you to all our volunteers, Team Dorset Athletics Network and Active Dorset for their help, Park Run UK, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and the Friends of Lodmoor.

“The Weymouth Ukulelean Group and the Weymouth Accordion Group kindly gave their time free of charge to mark our 100th park run – and for that we are incredibly grateful.”

At the celebratory event there were goody bags on offer for all first timers and those who started running in the past year. There were also presentations to the age-graded superstar runners.

Weymouth Park Run starts with the preamble at 8.45am every Saturday morning.
