THE WEYMOUTH RNLI lifeboat crew were called to three incidents as it marked its open day.

The final event of Weymouth RNLI lifeboat week saw the town's lifeboats were opened to the public yesterday but the event nearly did not happen as just before it was set to start both boats were called to reports of an upturned vessel in Chesil Cove with two people in the water.

When they arrived on scene Wyke Coastguards were assisting so the lifeboats were not required and the open day got underway as planned with a stream of visitors coming in.

The inshore lifeboat had to dash out later in the morning to assist a broken down RIB with two people on board two miles south east of Portland Bill.

It towed the stricken vessel back to Castletown on Portland.

In the evening both boats were again called out following reports of a vessel in trouble in Weymouth Bay, off the beach at Greenhill.

They searched the area for an hour and found nothing untoward so returned to berth.
