WE'RE going on a trip down memory lane again to look at more carnival queens.

This week it's some reminiscing about 1980, when the Weymouth Carnival Queen was Jeanette Donnison.

Jeanette was a departmental manager at Debenhams and her photo was used on the cover of the carnival programme, which cost 30p.

Her two attendants were Shirley Moran and Julie Browne. The trio was chosen from over two dozen other contestants who were all vying to be carnival queen.

They all had a busy day on carnival day 1980, Wednesday August 20, starting at the Gloucester Hotel at 10.30am, visiting the attractions throughout the day, taking part in the carnival procession and ending the hectic day late at night in the Carnival Disco.

It was reader Sue Hogben who brought this old programme to our attention.

She said: "It was funny leafing through the pages, brought a right old lump to my throat. "In 1980 my kids were only young, and Carnival Day in Weymouth was, (and still is,) a big family affair.

"We would all decamp to the family beach hut for the day, it was run by my dad like a military operation!

"On the beach at the crack of dawn, windbreaks had to be put out 'just so' to mark out our territory, rugs spread out far and wide to stop an pitch invasion by the masses."
