A NEW play trail around a popular castle in Dorset has been created with the help of kids and families from the county.

Families and children from Dorset have been working with artists at Durlston Country Park National Nature Reserve in Swanage to create the new trail, which runs around Durlston Castle.

The work for the trail was funded by Dorset County Council’s short breaks programme.

The project began with children visiting Durlston to explore ideas, which were brought to life by artists Forkbeard Fantasy.

Katie Black, Durlston senior ranger, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Dorset short breaks scheme for funding this great project.

“These items around the gardens are a great bonus for children of all ages and abilities, so do make sure you pick up the activity trail leaflet from the castle so as not to miss any.”

The new trail includes a wide range of activities including a telescope which sees the past, new wheelchair accessible viewing platform with spectacular views of the cliffs, Braille birds, a bouncy bird table and sensory garden.

The launch of the trail was marked by cutting the ribbon on a giant snail, which was cut by Josh and Daniel Simons.

People then had the opportunity to tour the trail and the launch was completed with tea and cakes in the Castle garden.

The short breaks scheme has also provided an off-road wheelchair for adults or children and a Tramper off-road electric buggy.

Ian Bennet from the Dorset short breaks scheme added: “We are delighted to be able to provide opportunities like this to help families have great days out in Dorset, regardless of any disabilities.”

Durlston Castle in Swanage is free to visit and open every day from 10am until 5pm.

The castle recently re-opened after a major restoration project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other partners.

Durlston Country Park National Nature Reserve surrounding the castle is a popular site for wildlife and is owned and managed by Dorset County Council.

A varied programme of events runs all year round, including guided walks, lectures, family activities, courses and classes and live music.
