THE owners of a colourful bird were all aflutter as they were reunited with their beloved pet.

As reported in the Echo last week, a peacock, which had been named Percy, had taken residence in a garden in Crossways after going missing from its owner’s home.

An appeal was launched by the house’s owner, Sandra Wayman, to try and reunite him with his real owners and thanks to seeing the story in the Echo, they have now been put back in touch.

It turns out that the peacock’s real name is actually Oscar and not Percy and that the bird had gone missing from Sandra’s next door neighbour’s garden.

Sandra explained: “You are never going to believe where they live – next door.

“Well, not actually next door in the sense that our houses are next to each other.

“Their garden is very large, a few acres, and runs alongside ours which is much smaller but there are tall trees and bushes between us so we don’t see into each other’s gardens.

“They only moved in two weeks ago which is why we weren’t aware they had a peacock.”

The search for Oscar’s owners began on Friday, August 21, when he showed up in Sandra’s garden.

He appeared tame so she believed that he must have an owner and set about around Crossways trying to find his owner.

After having no luck she contacted the Echo to see if his owners could be found and after an attempt by the RSPCA to remove him from the garden, the stubborn bird refused to be moved until his owners were found.

Another neighbour saw the article in the Echo and had already met the new neighbours and Oscar so alerted them to the fact that he was now living in the nearby garden.

He had also attempted to make a home for himself in the other neighbour’s garden before being chased off by their terrier.

Just a week later on Friday, August 28, Oscar was being encouraged back in to his owner’s garden but Sandra hopes it is farewell but not goodbye.

Sandra added: “The good news is that Oscar is now being encouraged back to his owner’s garden but, now that we know where he belongs, we’re hoping that he will still visit occasionally.”
