SOME people came to fly, some came to watch, others came for some fresh air and a chance to take in one of the best views in Dorset at the Eggardon Kite Festival.

Now organised by Bridport Round Table the festival has been an annual draw for 19 years.

Organiser Archie Turner said: “We all enjoyed a fantastic day, with some great weather and a lot of beautiful kites.

“We had club flyers from Portsmouth, Solent, Brighton and Poole as well as the invaluable support and enthusiasm of local kite makers and flyers Karen and Godfrey Gamble.

“A special mention should go to Mr Cao from Vietnam an international kite enthusiast who brought along and flew three traditional bamboo flute kites – that make musical noises as they fly.”

There was estimated 1200 visitors throughout the day.

It was excellent picnic weather with a chance to enjoy some local produce from Purbeck ice cream, Jalopy Pizza, The Anchor Inn and Dorset Gourmet Hot Dogs.

Another voluntary group ran the hill top café with produce made and donated by parents, children and staff of Powerstock school with homemade cakes and hot drinks.

Children and some adults made small kites at the kite workshop - kindly sponsored by “Bridport Banners” and staffed by Bridport Round Table, Karen Gamble and two young volunteers Ruby and Yoko Rogers.

The festival is expected to make £2500 which will go to local charities and good causes, including Powerstock school, the Beaminster Riding for the Disabled Stella Hayward RDA group and the West Bay Play area which is planning to be extended with more inclusive play equipment.
