Swimmers taking part in an annual fundraising event in Dorchester this weekend will be able to support a Weymouth family’s bid for a life-changing operation for their daughter.

Organisers of the Dorchester Lions Swimarathon say they are keen to support the family of Tahlia Kenner, from Wyke Regis.

Tahlia suffers from severe Cerebral Palsy and the Echo has reported how Helen and Robert are hoping to raise £40,000 for her to have surgery that will dramatically improve her quality of life.

The 33rd annual Swimarathon is being held on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning at Dorchester Sports Centre.

There are still places available on both days and entry to the event is free.

Teams of up to six or individuals, as well as aqua-fit teams, can take part and will be able to raise funds for their chosen causes as well as the Lions’ charities.

The Lions say the event will give people the chance to raise funds for Tahlia’s campaign as their chosen charity and the club will also make a contribution from its share of the proceeds to the appeal.

A spokesman for the Lions said: “This year the Lions were particularly touched to hear of the fundraising efforts of the family and friends of Tahlia Kenner from Wyke Regis - who are all raising money for a life-changing operation that may dramatically improve this little girl’s quality of life.

“The Lions are hoping as many people as possible get behind the family’s appeal and the club hopes that the Swimarathon will give an opportunity for all Tahlia’s supporters to raise money for this good cause.

“For those entering on Tahlia’s behalf, Dorchester Lions have pledged to make a contribution to help the appeal.”

Sponsorship forms for the Swimarathon can be downloaded at lionsdorchester.org.uk and individual simmers can make a contribution on the day of the event.

Tahlia’s mum Helen said the family had been ‘overwhelmed’ by the response to their appeal since it was reported in the Echo and she was delighted that the Lions would be supporting the campaign through the Swimarathon.

She said: “We really appreciate their help.

“It’s been so lovely, the response has just been so overwhelming.”
