A FUN-FILLED free evening will be bringing a taste of the Caribbean to Dorchester.

The Corn Exchange will host an Old Skool Reggae night on Saturday, October 10, to mark Black History Month.

The evening will starts 6pm and will feature poetry, a short and engaging talk and rap music from talented local musician Chucky.

There will also be an opportunity to see the ‘All Different, All Dorset’ video, which shows people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds talking about their experiences of living in Dorset, as well as enjoy a range of interesting displays.

An exciting musical line-up will be headlined by Intermix Sound System, who will be playing reggae and ska music that is guaranteed to have the audience up and dancing.

The esteemed Noah Messomo from Cameroon will also be adding to the evening's entertainment, sharing the exotic sounds various beautifully crafted instruments to evoke the soul and spirit of Africa.

Delicious Caribbean food will be on sale, cooked by talented restaurant owner Prince, The menu on offer will include mouth watering treats such as authentic stewed goat curry and jerk chicken served with plantain and coleslaw.

There will also be a vegetarian option available and a licensed bar for the adults.

The evening is being hosted by the South West Dorset Multicultural Network, a local group that has a track record of putting on well organised family events to help celebrate different cultures. The organisation said: “The theme of the evening is celebrating migration – and the SWDMCN hope that you will join them to show that Dorset values diversity.

“The event welcomes people of all ages and a warm, friendly atmosphere is guaranteed.”

The South West Dorset Multicultural Network added that it wanted to thank West Dorset District Council, Dorchester Town Council, the NHS and Dorset County Council for supporting the community event.

Emma Scott, community development officer at West Dorset District Council said: “This is a wonderful community event and quite unique as people of all ages come together to eat, chat and dance. The atmosphere is truly friendly and the night has become a regular diary fixture that many look forward to all year”.

Black History Month has been celebrated every October in the UK for the past 35 years.

It is a nationwide celebration of black history, arts and culture.
