A COMMUNITY came out to celebrate the life of a much a much loved man and planted a tree in his honour.

Jack Palmer, 86, had lived at Prospect Place, Weymouth since 1973, bringing up five children with his wife Audrey.

He was an active member of the Chapelhay playgarden committee, where the tree was planted in his honour.

Around 80 members of the community gathered at the park to enjoy food, including chips made from potatoes grown in the garden, as well as speeches and to plant the olive tree in Jack’s memory.

Twenty-two members of Jack’s family also joined the celebrations.

There were speeches from Jack’s son Matt Palmer and Clare Sutton, from the playgarden committee.

Speaking to the crowds, Matt said: “Nothing was ever too much trouble for dad.

“I just want to thank you all so much for planting this tree in dad’s honour and dad’s name.”

Clare described him as the "face of the garden".

Work over several years has seen the garden and play park transformed in to the community asset it is today and everyone paid tribute to the work Jack did transforming it.
