TONIGHT’S the night! Dorset’s bonfire and fireworks celebrations are set to go with a bang – if the weather allows.

The skies above Dorset will be a riot of light and colour as fireworks whizz, bang and whoosh overhead while bonfires will burn brightly as families gather to mark November 5.

But the weather could disrupt proceedings – it is forecast to be wet today, with rain forecast from 12noon until around 7pm. However the evening is expected to be drier but cloudier.

Celebrations in Weymouth organised by the borough council kick off at 3pm, with a funfair opening at the Pavilion forecourt.

Then there will be the traditional free children’s Guy Fawkes competition at 6.30pm in the Pavilion foyer.

Prizes for the best Guy have been donated by the Pavilion, Alexandra Gardens and Weymouth Swimming Pool.

The beach bonfire will be lit at 7.40pm followed by a firework display over Weymouth Bay at 8pm.

Council spokesman for Tourism and Culture Jason Osbourne said: “Weymouth’s Big Guy Fawkes event is always a hugely popular occasion.

"Lots of families come down to Weymouth’s seafront to share one of Britain’s great traditional events, creating a wonderful atmosphere in a fun and safe environment.”

For people attending the evening’s activities there will be free car parking available in all borough council-run car parks after 6pm.

The council says events are subject to weather, environmental and operational conditions.

In West Dorset there will be a bonfire and firework display at the Marquis of Lorne Pub, Nettlecombe, tonight from 7pm. There will be an outside bar and barbecue.
