A CLIFFTOP chalet made famous by smash-hit television show Broadchurch looks set to be demolished.

An application has been submitted to West Dorset District Council to knock down the hut, at Eype Car Park in west Dorset.

The hut was the setting of Danny Latimer’s death which was the catalyst for the murder investigation in the first series of the show, which is written by Bridport-based writer Chris Chibnall.

It also featured heavily in the second series, with one of the final shots of the series taking place at the chalet.

The application has been submitted by Symonds and Sampson on behalf of the hut’s owners due to fears that constant erosion on that stretch of coast will result in it plunging into the sea.

As part of the application, a similar hut would be rebuilt approximately 50-100 metres further inland.

It is not yet known how the demolition of the hut would impact filming for the third series of the show, which is set to start shooting scenes for the upcoming third series of the show in the summer.

Edward Dyke, partner at Symonds and Sampson, said: “The existing chalet is getting closer and closer to the cliff edge and there is a concern over the longevity of the existing chalet.

“The family are concerned about that and want to move it back and re-erect it in a better location. They are hoping it will still look the same, but it will be in a different location.

“No date has been set yet for it to be demolished if it receives planning permission, but I think the family want to do it relatively soon.”

Following the success of Broadchurch, which is set in West Dorset and filmed in West Bay, thousands of the show’s fans, affectionately nicknamed ‘Broadies’, have flocked to the resort to see the cliffs and the hut where the show is filmed.

Broadchurch super-fan Becca Overton, who created the show’s fan’s Facebook page which has attracted more than 95,000 likes, said she was disappointed it would be knocked down.

She said: “I am upset, but they have got a good reason to do it.

“In a few years it could end up in the sea so I can see their point of view, but at the same time its become well-known to fans of the show.

“It’s iconic really, it’s a bit like the cliffs in West Bay. You look at the cliffs, you look at the chalet, you think of Broadchurch. One of the most asked questions on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram is how people can get to the hut so they can see it.

“I think everyone will be definitely sad to see it go, but I can understand the reasons why and hopefully the new one will look exactly the same.”

The news comes as David Tennant, who plays DI Alec Hardy in the show, remained tight-lipped about the plot for the third series, telling television show Good Morning Britain that he was unsure of what Mr Chibnall was going to do with the plot, and that it was such a close-guarded secret that there were two scripts for the show.
