WEYMOUTH 6 ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 1

WEYMOUTH played hosts to Aldershot & Farnham last Saturday and earned their fifth consecutive win in Hampshire Area Division One.

Conditions were windy and extremely cold, but that did not stop Weymouth’s attacking pace from running riot.

The Seasiders were without right-back Simon Harvey, however, experienced Michael Westlake was on hand to fill the position to good effect.

It was Weymouth who made the first breakthrough within three minutes of the start. David Eames picked out forward Patrick May, who opened the scoring with a powerful shot, which was deflected by one of the Aldershot defenders into the goal.

Weymouth’s quick pace proved to be too much for the visiting team when May picked the ball from a defensive 16 and played a pin-point ball across the D, where Luke Drewitt came sliding in for the tap in.

Minutes later, goalscorer Drewitt made a run down the right hand side, he then slipped the ball to a screaming Matt Underhill.

Underhill still had some work to do and danced around two defenders to make room for his famous reverse strike, resulting in Weymouth’s third of the match.

At this point the Seasiders were 3-0 up with just 14 minutes on the clock.

Unfortunately for the home side, David Beaudro got a stick to the hand and had to be taken off, calling for a re-shuffle in the defence. Beaudro did not return to the pitch and ended his Saturday in A&E.

With the loss of their experienced player, the Seasiders went on the attack looking to improve their lead.

This time it was skipper Steve Membury who found the back of the net.

Once again, May played a ball across the face of the goal, where the Weymouth captain was waiting for the easy tap-in to make it 4-0.

As half-time grew closer, Weymouth lost a little focus and conceded a goal.

Roly Gill managed to stop the first Aldershot effort but was unfortunately unable to prevent the second. Goalkeeper David Civil was displeased about conceding after having little to do during the first half.

The Seasiders refocused at half-time and came out fighting.

This led to another quick goal from the off. Within two minutes of the restart Aaron Wilkinson had made a darting run in front of the visiting goalkeeper, where once again Eames played a rocket of a pass into the D for an easy tap in for Wilkinson to make it 5-1 in the hosts’ favour.

Shortly after, the game then started to get a little scrappy with a fouls by both sets of players. Membury received a green card and two minutes in the sin bin for a perceived bad tackle.

Just under an hour into the game, Weymouth again broke free. Underhill went on one of his darting runs, skinning players for fun to put a pass across to May, who then smashed home Weymouth’s sixth in the match to cap a win which keeps the Seasiders in second spot in the league.

Man of the match: Michael Westlake

  • Saturday sees the clash of the top two sides in the division as Weymouth travel to Winchester to meet the league leaders. Should the Seasiders record their sixth win on the bounce, they will go top of the pile.
