WEYMOUTH looks set for a jobs boost after two giant national companies said more than 40 jobs could be created in the town.

Popular fast food takeaway Domino’s Pizza has been granted planning permission for a new store on Portland Road in Wyke Regis, and budget Hotel Premier Inn has submitted a planning application for a third storey extension at its Weymouth gateway site.

Up to 35 jobs, mainly part time, will be created at the new pizza store, with an extra six expected at the hotel.

More jobs will also be created during the building of the hotel, although these would only be temporary.

Domino’s Pizza was granted a change of use permission for a former convenience store by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s (WPBC) planning and traffic committee this week, despite objections from some councillors over traffic issues for residents in neighbouring roads.

The national chain, which also delivers pizzas, currently already has one store in Weymouth and will open the new store in 2016.

The new store will allow the firm to make deliveries to more addresses on Portland, which it currently cannot do from its current store.

The councillors on the committee voted for it seven to two, but the committee’s chairman, Cllr Kate Wheller, said the new store would cause ‘havoc’ because of the number of cars that will use the new shop, including delivery drivers, coupled with the existing number of cars that use the four other takeaways.

She said: “Cars will be reversing out onto the main road, there will be children running about into the takeaways.

“If they can’t park in the car park then they will park on Parkmead Road, it will cause havoc for the residents who live in that area.”

Premier Inn has submitted its planning application to add a three-storey extension to the south of the existing building to accommodate 27 bedrooms, bringing the total capacity up to 87 rooms, to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

Owners the Whitbread Group say the move is being made because the hotel is performing well and additional bedrooms will ‘improve the offer’ of the facility.

Premier Inn’s, which also has another hotel at Lodmoor, will reconfigure its car park and relocate its plant compound as part of the plans.

A document submitted states: “The facility on Gateway Business Park is extremely popular with business travellers. The high average occupancy levels of the hotel have established a clear requirement to expand at this location to fulfil an identified customer need.”
