LONG-AWAITED plans to improve the traffic and parking situation across Dorchester are set to be considered.

Dorset County Council's regulatory committee will meet to discuss various parking restrictions.

In a report signed off by Andrew Martin, head of highways at the county council, the committee is being asked to consider a number of recommendations.

This includes approving waiting restrictions on Queens Avenue, Treves Road, Clarence Road, South Court Avenue, Alfred Road and Cromwell Road.

The proposals are designed to improve the movement of vehicles and reduce indiscriminate parking.

In Queens Avenue, Treves Road and Clarence Road, it is proposed that no waiting times are installed on specific lengths.

To allow residents to park all day, lengths of unrestricted parking would remain which would allow parents to park close to the school.

Meanwhile, in South Court Avenue, the council would like to put a no waiting at any time requirement on the south side.

Plans have also been put forward for no waiting at any time in Alfred Road and a length of no waiting between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday in Cromwell Road.

Earlier this year residents called for more restrictive parking measures to be introduced in the county town.

Kerry Aslin, 26, was one of several people concerned by the increasing amount of drivers parking next to the Alfred Road and Cromwell Road junction.

Discussing the proposals, Kerry suggested the problem wouldn't go away unless alternative measures were introduced.

She said: "I think they should put the lines on the corner or they should make it permit parking.

"It's ridiculous having all these roads next to a train station and none of it is permit parking at all.

"There's always going to be an issue over here."

In addition to these potential waiting restrictions, councillors are being asked to abandon all day parking proposals for Coburg Road and Edward Road.

The recommendations have been influenced by the results of a consultation held towards the end of last year.

It attracted 22 letters of response and opinions were sought from Dorset Police and the town council.

Following objections by Coburg Road residents, councillors are being asked to shelve current plans for Coburg Road and Edward Road.

The report to councillors states the proposals for the area will be revisited and a new design will go out to public consultation.
