“It was reported that he had been assaulted by another man.

Officers made enquiries and searched the area but no arrests have been made.”

Cllr John Birtwistle, who represents Weymouth East for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said he was ‘horrified’ to hear about the incident.

He said: “It absolutely appalling we are getting attacks taking place in Nothe Gardens, which is a place where people take their families and run their dogs.

“The fact something happened there is really worrying.

“I just hope anybody who knows anything responds to the police’s request for information.

“It’s quite worrying if you’re not safe in Nothe Gardens.

“People go up there in the afternoon expecting to be able to enjoy it. I’m horrified.”

The Friends of Nothe Gardens, chaired by Roger Genge, was set up by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to involve residents further in the management of the area.

The group aims to encourage responsible use of the gardens. It works behind the scenes to record anti-social behaviour and crime that occurs in the area.
