A CELEBRITY vet will be the star guest at a dog show and fun day.

Bruce Fogle is a television vet and father to Ben Fogle, as well as a best selling author and co-founder of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

He and his team will be putting on a demonstration showing the incredible things hearing dogs do for their companions.

The charity is the beneficiary of the fun day and dog show, which is organised by the Rotary Club of Melcombe Regis and takes place at Budmouth College from 10am on Sunday, April 10.

The third annual event will feature both pedigree and novelty classes and is a qualifier for Buckham Fair.

There will also be trade and craft stalls, a miniature steam railway, children’s rides, a barbecue and refreshments.

Organiser Mary Larkin said: “Last year was a huge success with over 200 dogs being registered, and this year is looking even better. We have also been selected as the first qualifier for the Buckham Fair Best Rescue competition. However, the event is not just about dogs, it is a fantastic Family Fun Day out.”

She added: “I have seen the hearing dogs doing their demonstrations before and they are amazing.

“They have a mock up of a house, with actors, and show how the dogs can wake someone up if a fire alarm goes off and get them safely out of the house.”

The event is once again sponsored by Dave Cumber vets.

Bruce Fogle, MBE, launched Hearing Dogs for Deaf People in 1982 with the late Lady Beatrice Wright. The charity trains dogs, some which are rescued and some selectively bred, to act as ears for hearing-impaired people.

At the moment, it has over 850 working hearing dog partnerships across the UK.

The cost of each hearing dog throughout their lifetime is about £45,000 – so the charity relies heavily on donations.

Bruce is still a trustee and vice-chairman of the charity.

His son Ben, one of Bruce’s three children, is a broadcaster and adventurer. He went to school in Bryanston.
