RUSH-hour commuters are facing delays after a lorry got stuck under a bridge in Taunton town centre.

The lorry crashed into the train station bridge on Kingston Road, and has got stuck underneath.

The road was closed by police for a short while but has now reopened.

There were initial concerns that some damage had been caused to the bridge's structure, but a spokesman for Network Rail confirmed that none had been caused.

Engineers are still at the scene inspecting the incident.

Traffic is building up in the area as the roads are already busy with rush-hour traffic.

The lorry got stuck around 8.45am and cars are currently being directed around it.

Police officers are currently at the scene directing traffic, and engineers are also on their way to figure out how to free the lorry from the bridge.

The vehicle, a haulage lorry, belongs to Sparks Transport.

A spokesman from Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called to reports of a lorry crashing into the train station bridge at around 8.30am.

"Network Rail and Somerset County Council have been advised as it looks like there has been some damaged caused to the bridge.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the forseeable future until engineers have completed their work."

The spokesman for Network Rail said that although the first few trains were cautioned through, none had been delayed and the service was back to normal running times.
