KNITTERS are being urged to p-p-pick up their needles and help add to a charity's penguin colony.

The Royal Voluntary Service (RVS), which delivers practical support to elderly people in Dorset through the power of volunteering, is running its Big Knit campaign again this year.

Last year the group asked for donations of knitted penguins, which then went on sale in Dorchester Tourist Information Centre and other venues and raised more than £300.

The scheme was made possible as a supporter designed a bespoke knitting pattern for the charity that was distributed to those making the donations.

This year the charity is aiming to raise £3,000 to help support its services for older people and is again looking for donations of knitted penguins.

Maria Jacobson, from the RVS, said: "Any money raised stays locally and supports local older people in their own homes to stay happy, healthy, warm and connected, so please, have some fun and bring sunshine to an older person this year."

Last year 100 penguins were donated and the charity sold out just before Christmas.

Maria said: "They are really special, and every one of them is unique."

The RVS has since received requests for more so it is looking for local knitters, groups or anyone else who can help with donations.

This year it has been able to obtain a supply of woven labels with the RVS logo that can be sent out with the knitting patters and sewn onto the finished penguins.

The charity is also keen to hear from anyone who can help display posters or distribute the patterns locally. If anyone wants to make a donation but would prefer to knit something a bit simpler, the charity can also provide a range of basic hat patterns.

Donations of other handmade items will also be gratefully received.
