HUNDREDS of bikers are set to ride across Dorset again to raise funds for kidney patients in the county.

Organisers are hoping to attract around 500 motorcyclists for the convoy in aid of the renal units at Dorset County Hospital and its satellite unit at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

The event was organised for the first time last year and was inspired renal patient friend Spencer Furley, who has dialysis three times a week.

Dialysis is a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working properly. It often involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned.

Normally, the kidneys filter the blood, removing harmful waste products and excess fluid and turning these into urine to be passed out of the body.

If your kidneys aren't working properly, they may not be able to clean the blood properly. Waste products and fluid can build up to dangerous levels in your body.

Around 200 bikers rode out from the Queen Elizabeth School in Wimborne, heading across the county to the Henstridge Airfield in Somerset, raising £2,200 for kidney patients in the process.

This year the event will follow the same route and there will again be entertainment at the airfield when riders get there at the end.

Spencer, who turns 40 next month, said they have laid on even more this year and he hopes the event, which is taking place on Saturday, June 26, will be even bigger and better than before.

He said: "Fingers crossed it will be a bit bigger this year, we are looking for about 500 riders possibly."

At the airfield bikers will be able to enjoy a blast down the runway, relax and enjoy a hog roast, browse a host of trade stands including model aircraft displays and listen to live music from Hot Java Lava.

All proceeds from the event will go to the county's renal units and support kidney patients.

Like last year, the ride will be accompanied by Dorset Police and will be lead out by Unity Support Riders.

It promises to make an impressive spectacle as the riders head out in convoy across the county.

Spencer said he was thrilled with the success of last year's event and was hoping to steadily build the event up every time.

He said: "It would be great if we got get an improvement every year."
