A YOUNG supporter has been recognised as a "shining example" to other fans at Dorchester Town Football Club.

A special presentation before the Magpies' home match against Redditch at the weekend saw Chantelle Edwards recognised as the club's Young Supporter of the Year.

Chantelle was recognised for her unstinting support of the club in front of her fellow fans at the Avenue Stadium ahead of kick-off.

Dorchester Town FC community director Allen Knott, who organised the award on behalf of the directors, addressed the crowd to explain how the youngster had been chosen because of her regular attendance at home matches, her passionate support for the team and for her shining example as a supporter.

He also added that she encouraged other supporters with her cheerful disposition and winning smile.

Magpies team captain Nathan Walker presented Chantelle with a football that had been signed by every member of the team and had been donated by the Supporters Club.

She was also presented with a framed certificate by Knott and a shield by the club chairman Matthew Lucas.

Chantelle, who attends Wyvern School in Weymouth, was thrilled to receive the award and admitted she had no idea it was coming.

She said: "It was a complete surprise getting this award. It’s simply great."

Mr Lucas said that recognising the efforts of young supports and encouraging the next generation of fans was key to the Magpies' efforts as a community club.

He said: "We are so pleased to give this award to Chantelle.

"We are a community club and as such every member is of equal importance however they support the club.

"We are very proud of our young supporters and will do all we can to encourage them to continue their love of the game."
