FOLK singer Blair Dunlop is bringing his cerebral sound to Dorset this weekend.

He will perform at Marnhull Village Hall, North Dorset, on Sunday as part of his UK tour.

Blair, a writer, guitarist and vocalist, will perform songs from his upcoming studio album Gilded, as well as material from his back catalogue.

He gave The Guide an idea of what to expect from his gig and an insight into his life as a singer-songwriter.

"I think I would describe my sound as a lyric driven and folk influenced singer-songwriter," he said.

Blair has gone the DIY route and is releasing his latest album, Gilded, on his own label.

"It's been really freeing actually. Having the creative freedom to make the album you want to make is a real joy.

"There's also the financial benefits... I think it's a route that a lot of artists are going down now, especially in this digital age. Generally, I think there's less need for a label in the traditional sense."

It was recorded in Elbow’s Blueprint* studio, an 'amazing' experience, Blair said.

"I know it sounds cliché but the main room has a real energy, and I think you can hear it on the record.

"We were locked in the studio for just two weeks so it was quite intense, but I think it was a great way of working.

"The studio was a real pleasure to work in and everyone there was on board with the record, so that helped make everything tick!"

Joining Blair in his show and will be Jacob J Stoney on keys and Fred Claridge on drums.

He added: "It'll be mainly the new album but a few oldies and I'll be playing a mix of electric and acoustic.

"A good friend of mine Jack Carty is over from Australia to open for us and he's ace, so we feel privileged to have him along in the van!"
