A RACING stud in the heart of the Dorset countryside which has produced champion horses is up for sale for £4.75m.

Whitcombe Monymusk stables and stud, near Dorchester, was bought by the late Liz Nelson in 2006 and the trainer there, Jo Crowley, worked in partnership with her for a number of years.

In the last decade, Whitcombe has benefitted from huge investment and it has now come to the market after Mrs Nelson passed away in 2014.

Horse breeder Mrs Nelson, who was made an MBE for her charity work, had horses in training on the site with Gaye Kellaway and Toby Balding before she bought the stables.

The property combines purpose-built equestrian facilities and extensive residential accommodation currently used for both training and breeding horses.

A spokesman for Savills, which is marketing the property, said: “Past trainers who have progressed from Whitcombe include Toby Balding and David Elsworth, and the establishment has produced some notable horses including Regal Scintilla and Cool Ground, which won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

“The property extends to more than 300 acres, with extensive private facilities and additional support services, including an on-site equine veterinary centre and farriery area.”

The stud facility has a manager’s flat, 27 stables, horse walker, lunge ring, loading bay and storage, and the training facility includes a detached trainer’s house, five staff apartments, a 32 bed staff dormitory and racing office.

Whitcombe Monymusk House was designed by Genesis Design architects and completed in 2013. In addition there are 110 stables, an indoor manege, two horse walkers, wash down area and stores.

“Whitcombe offers a superb opportunity for an owner, trainer or breeder to create a base with extensive facilities in a fantastic rural setting,” said David Cross of Savills Salisbury.
