EMERGENCY services rescued a teenage boy who had become trapped in quicksand at The Fleet in Weymouth over the weekend.

They were also tasked with treating a girl who had reportedly fallen from a horse.

The incident prompted a warning from coastguards regarding the potential hazards along the county's picturesque coastline.

A spokesman for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it was involved in rescue efforts after receiving a call at around 11.15am on Saturday, reporting a 13-year-old boy trapped in quicksand at the end of Camp Road in the Wyke Regis area.

A specialist rescue team from Weymouth attended, along with a crew from Portland and two crews from Dorchester.

The spokesman said that ambulance and coastguard services also attended the scene in order to release the boy.

Once he was released, the teenager was able to walk out of his own accord before being assessed by paramedics from the South Western Ambulance Service at the scene.

A spokesman for the South Western Ambulance Service confirmed they had attended following reports of a male, believed to be a teenager, stuck in quicksand.

They said that the man was treated by its staff at the scene.

Mark Fagg, station officer at Wyke Coastguard, said: "There is soft mud around and just be aware of your surroundings.

"If you get into issues, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

"Let people know where you are going and when you will be back."

Shortly before the quicksand incident, both the ambulance service and the Wyke Coastguard team had been called to nearby Pirates Lane following reports that a girl had fallen off a horse.

Mr Fagg said: "We were originally tasked to a female that fell from a horse at the bottom of Pirates Lane.

"Two of my men assisted."

She was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital but was said to be "conscious and quite happy" at the time.

The ambulance service spokesman said the casualty was believed to have suffered back and chest injuries, with reports that the horse was travelling "at some speed" when she fell from its back.
