FIREFIGHTERS urged people to stay indoors after a chlorine gas alert at public toilets in Weymouth.

Emergency services were called to Overcombe Corner near to the Café Oasis in Preston this morning.

Eyewitnesses saw fire crews arrive and the area has been cordoned off this morning.

A spokesman for the fire service said they were callled at 10.02am. She said: "Two crews from Weymouth and Portland are in attendance."

The spokesman added that the fire crews proceeded with caution as public toilets often contain flammable chemicals.

She added: "A member of the public saw smoke issuing from the toilets."

Station Manager Christopher Pack said:"The incident was caused by a cleaning product left on a heater which has caused chlorine gas to be produced.

"We have ventilated with crews and breathing apparatuses and made the situation safe. We will hand over to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

"We have informed local residents to stay indoors with their windows closed."

A fire service spokesman said the chemicals left on top of a radiator caused the 'chemical concern.'

No-one was injured.

A resident of Bowleaze Coveway said: "They just told me they would let me know if there was any danger.

"We could not smell anything. They were very efficient. They put me at ease so there was no fear of anything."

A passer-by said: "Thank you to the person who was observant and who did something about it rather than walking away.

"I am very grateful that the fire brigade. They are efficient and get on with it."

Fire crews had cleared the scene by 12.02pm. A council van remains on scene.

The advice for residents to stay indoors has now been lifted.
