AN EU referendum ‘leave’ event tomorrow featuring big names from politics and business is set to be a full house.

Recognising people want to better understand the issues before voting in the referendum, Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce has organised two events featuring high profile speakers from both sides of the debate.

The first tomorrow at Weymouth Pavilion will feature some of the leading campaigners for the ‘leave’ side of the EU referendum.

The original line-up of speakers, Labour MP Kate Hoey, UKIP leader and MEP Nigel Farage and South Dorset MP Richard Drax, have been joined by founder and chairman of JD Wetherspoon, Tim Martin, who earlier this month donated £200,000 to the Vote Leave Campaign.

Speakers will present why they believe the UK is better out of the EU, before answering questions

submitted by the audience.

More than 600 tickets have already been sold of the 998 seats available.

A second public event has been organised at Weymouth College on Thursday, June 9, which will cover arguments to remain in the EU.

Chamber vice-chairman Shenis Cant said: “It’s good to see proof that people in Dorset are engaged with the referendum and want to find out more about the issues. We’re satisfied that over our two public events, we will have provided a balance of views, delivered by leading proponents on both sides.”

She added: “Many people we speak to through the chamber say they don’t feel they’ve enough information to decide how to vote in the EU referendum. As it’s likely to be one of the most important votes they cast in their lives, we felt it’s important to give them the opportunity to hear the arguments. Across our two events, we’re providing a balanced look at the EU debate. We hope attendees will find themselves in a better position to make a decision, as well as better able to share information with colleagues, friends and family.”

Last-minute tickets are available from the Pavilion box office. Doors open at 6pm with the event running from 7pm-9pm. Tickets for the 'remain' event will shortly be available through the chamber's website.

The ‘remain’ event is taking place on Thursday, June 9 at Weymouth College, with speakers Clare Moody MEP, Anthony Smallwood, who is a former press spokesman for the EU, and Richard Bronk, a political economist. Tickets for the event will shortly be available through the chamber’s website.
