ARMED police swooped on a residential street in Weymouth.

One man was arrested on suspicion of driving offences during the incident, which happened on Monday evening.

Armed officers and dog units from Dorset Police were seen in Bradford Road, Westham, at around 6.30pm.

The force was responding to reports that a man had allegedly reversed his car into a stationary vehicle before walking into a building.

A spokesman from Dorset Police said: “It was also reported that the man returned to the vehicle and removed an air rifle and air pistol.

“Officers attended the address, with support from armed officers as a precaution.

“A cordon was put in place while officers attempted to engage with the man.”

Mick Norton, a Westham resident, saw much of the unfolding events.

He said: “There were about half a dozen police cars, a riot van and three armed response vehicles.”

“Police were knocking on a door.”

It is alleged that the man left via the rear exit of the property.

Several residents saw the incident unfold.

“It started at about 6pm so everyone was up,” said Mr Norton.

The Dorset Police spokesman added: “A 59-year-old local man left the property by the rear and was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and is currently assisting police officers with their enquiries.”

Officers remained in the Bradford Road area until after 9pm.
