THE adventurous outdoor pursuit of coasteering will be offered to youngsters in Dorset during half term.

Coasteering encompasses a wide range of physical activities focused on exploring the coastline, including swimming, diving and rock scrambling.

The Lulworth Rangers, who are responsible for running activities at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, will run sessions to mark the start of the summer season.

They focus on allowing families to explore the varied world of the Jurassic Coast and get up close and personal with Dorset's interesting history from the unique perspective of caves and the underwater world.

Those taking part will be encouraged to traverse the coastline on foot and in the water, spotting fossils and swimming through caves.

Instructors take small groups of people along the coastline starting at Lulworth Cove or Stair Hole.

The sessions are described as being suitable for children aged eight and over.

The instructors are licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, which allows them to take children on the activity as well as adults.

Caroline Sharp, head of marketing at the Lulworth Estate, said: "Coasteering is an activity which feels like it was invented for the coastline around Lulworth.

"The idea is really to allow people to explore the coastline in way that you can't from the shore - or if you were by yourself.

"Our focus is adventure, not adrenalin."

Derry Billings, who is the leader of the Lulworth Rangers coasteering team, said: "Coasteering at Lulworth is a unique experience and something that both kids and adults will remember for a long time.

"In the water, you get a completely different perspective.

"We love helping our adventurers discover the hidden features of the landscape that you simply can’t see from the beach - like fossils, wildlife and rock formations."

Coasteering sessions usually last for approximately three hours and are being offered at a half price rate between Saturday, May 28 and Friday, June 10.

The special price is £25 for adults and £17 for children, with all equipment provided.
