MY WIFE wanted to get from Abergavenny to Brecon on a Sunday, or possibly Bank Holiday Monday: No chance, no buses.

My mother, 94 3/4, needed to get from a heavily populated part of Weymouth - not Jupiter, or Mars - into town, by 9am: first bus, 0945. 0945! How do people get to work?

This situation is pitiful.

Transportation-wise the UK is a third world country.

A well known expression about not being able to organise a riotously good time in a beer manufacturing facility comes to mind.

Never mind welfare regulations regarding transportation of live animals, if you don’t vote to leave the EU you will probably be kicked out for not meeting the appropriate standards of transportation for live humans.

Decent public transport is a vital component of a modern economy. Comparisons are odious, but necessary to wake people up. Buses here start between 4-5am (6am on Sundays) and finish about 0130.

There is a pretty decent train service on ChristmasDay. I have a travel card that I can use on any bus, train, tram or Metro anywhere in the country.

In the Netherlands they would put you in a straight-jacket and take you away in a white van if you told them the first bus was not until 0945.

I think the UK government wants Uber to take over all public transport.

They’ve probably even got a name for the new company: Profit Uber Alles (Profit Above All Things).
