A TEAM of disabled cricketers are hoping to be bowled over by support when they play a charity match in Dorset.

The Dorset Disability Cricket Team will be playing at the Recreation Ground at Weymouth Avenue this Sunday (May 29),

The team will take on a team from the Help for Heroes charity.

It is hoped the event will raise funds for the charity as well as increasing the profile of the Dorset Disability Cricket Team.

The team was conceived and started by the late Gordon Pickersgill, who worked tirelessly on the project over many years.

His son Mark is the current team manager, as well as a player, and is looking to continue his father's vision.

The team is affiliated to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and proudly takes part in the National Super Nine’s league with fixtures this year against Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

Club chairman David Barrett said: "The reason for my involvement was when I witnessed the sheer joy and delight that accompanies every match and individual player when they take part and face the challenge to play the game we all love.

"We would therefore like to encourage any person with a disability to come along to our match to see for themselves the opportunity it may give them and to enable them to talk with others about it and to support the occasion.

"If they would then like to try to play we have through the auspices of Dorset Cricket Board regular training days at various venues around the county to provide coaching.

"We would also be especially pleased to see and to welcome anyone at our game and to offer them the opportunity of talking to others about playing."

The Dorset Disability Cricket Team was recently honoured when captain Rob Franks was selected to lead the national side.

He continues to be involved in the team, having helped them to the semi-final of the Super Nine tournament last year and is looking to help the side build on that achievement this summer.
