TWO fire crews battled a car fire at a house in Broadwey.

Firefighters were alerted at 2.20pm to the incident in Court Road, where a car was on fire in a car port attached to a house.

One crew from Weymouth and one crew from Dorchester were called.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said that there was an acetylene canister close to the garage, but this was moved and was not involved in the fire.

The fire was under control and the Dorchester crew hadl eft the scene by 2.50pm. A crew from Weymouth remained on the scene to dampen down.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, officers said.

Speaking at the scene, crew commander Tim Moore said: "We were called to a property at Court Road at 2.20pm.

"There was one fire engine from Weymouth, and one from Dorchester.

"We arrived [and found] there was smoke issuing from a vehicle in a car port.

"We used two breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to put the fire out, which came under control very quickly."

Mr Moore said a Land Rover suffered heat and smoke damage but the property was unaffected. Nobody was hurt.

Onlookers described hearing a lot of noise at the time of the incident.

One person, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We just saw lots and lots of black smoke and the breaking of glass."
