PRINCE William surprised staff at Asda by buying £850-worth of booze at the Weymouth supermarket.

Dressed in T-shirt, baseball cap and jeans the prince spent more than an hour at the store and filled four trolleys with wines, spirits, beer and snacks.

He even managed to clear the store out of Pimm's.

Store manager Darren Rideout said: "He came in the store at 2.10pm with two bodyguards.

"He had four trolley loads of shopping which was mainly alcohol and snacks. He cleared us out of Pimm's.

"He appeared as a normal customer. A few people came up and spoke to him and he was laughing and joking with them.

"The check-out girl didn't actually recognise him and he packed his own shopping.

"They left at 3.15pm with the Prince in a black Audi followed by two black Range Rovers."

He added: "We do get troops in from time to time taking advantage of our cheap booze offers so I suppose it was his turn."

The Prince is training to be a troop leader at Bovington Army Camp 15 miles from Weymouth.

His appearance at the store yesterday came just hours before Channel 4 screened a controversial documentary featuring images of his mother being treated after her fatal car crash.

Earlier this week Prince William's senior aid Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton wrote to Channel Four calling for the images to be removed.

Come on, be fair, he was either spending his wages, buying for his mates or else spending some of his Daddy's munificence which doesn't come from taxes. At least he came himself rather than sending some flunky and gave some shoppers and ASDA staff a vicarious thrill.

Anon, royal or not you are making assumptions about the life of someone you don't even know. I wouldn't call constant scrutiny of his life (for the whole of his life)easy

I wonder if he bought a crate of Duchy originals Winter Ale? I fine pint, I believe his father brews it in a shed at the bottom of the garden at Highgrove, mind you Camilla bakes the ginger thins in the kitchen their too. Not sure what Harry does, maybe he makes the Duchy originals cider?
