A SOMERSET MP has called on David Cameron to step in and help BHS staff following its demise.

Following a statement in the House of Commons on Monday, South Somerset MP Marcus Fysh has called for the Government to do all it can to support staff finding new roles in the retail sector.

In Somerset, stores in Taunton and Yeovil will close after the company's administrators were not able to complete a deal to sell the chain.

Although exact numbers have yet to be confirmed, many people will lose their jobs following the closure.

The Department of Work and Pensions, through Jobcentre Plus, is already working on a range of measures to support BHS staff and directly advise them on options including tracking local vacancies in the retail sector.

Jobcentre Plus will also be available to offer advice on CV writing, transferable skills and the Somerset job market.

Mr Fysh said: "I’ll be in regular contact with the Government team to see how these measures are offering practical help to staff.

"BHS is an iconic British brand and it’s loss from the High Street is very sad.

"There may be questions to be answered about the management and there are plans to look into that, but right now thoughts are with the staff and their families.

"I have lobbied the Government hard to introduce measures to help our High Streets, and the changes to Business Rates will undoubtedly help, but we need to do more as competition from the internet is intense.

"I would urge Local Authorities to look at ways to help too such as free parking for shoppers.’
