If you read last week’s column, you will know we recently attended a journalism workshop, and it was suggested we write a ‘pros and cons’ column. You may also remember the only things we disagree on are bananas, Strictly Come Dancing and football!

Not deterred by these random topics, today we introduce the ‘Great Banana Debate’.

Me first (Adam). I am not a banana man and have good reason for not liking them. When I was young they made me ill and though I’ve grown out of that now, it has left me rather banana-phobic.

When confronted with a banana, the first thing I notice is its sickly smell, infecting my nostrils like rotting rubbish. What’s worse is its mushy texture which makes my stomach turn. As for taste, well it’s like eating mouldy baby food.

However, if you take the banana itself away, pop it into a banoffee pie or banana yogurt, I’ll eat these fine!

As for me (William), I love bananas. They taste great and are so healthy. I recently discovered they are full of potassium which helps reduce high blood pressure, something I need to keep an eye on. They are also packed with fibre which helps digestion, and contain tryptophan to help us relax. I even bet you didn’t know the inside of their skin can ease mosquito bites?

What’s more, they are really easy to carry in my lunch box and help give me an energy boost when I’m working. Oh, and there’s no waste as I make banana cake when they start to go off.

So, do you love or hate them? We’d like to cheer the country up and have a vote on bananas. Which will win, ‘Banana In’ or ‘Banana Out’?
