A MARITIME demonstration unfolded before hundreds of marvelling spectators to celebrate the work of Weymouth and Portland's volunteer lifesavers.

The daring display drew crowds to Nothe Gardens as part of Weymouth's annual RNLI Lifeboat week this evening.

It began with a stricken mannequin at the base of the fort, rescued by abseiling coastguard officers and taken in a stretcher to a waiting lifeboat.

Once at sea, the unfortunate dummy was plucked from the waves by the Coastguard helicopter - a demonstration of skill by both the crews of the boats and the hovering chopper.

Crowds were treated to successive fly-bys over Weymouth Bay, showing exactly what sort of work the brave volunteers get up to.

After the demonstration ended the festivities rolled on with barbecue and music by Hustle.

Around the event, Stormy Stan, the RNLI's bushy-bearded mascot was making an appearance and taking photos with children.

Volunteers also walked around to take donations for the lifeboat service.

Steven Murray was visiting Weymouth from Scotland for a summer holiday with his family.

He said: "We were over yesterday at the harbour and my son found out about this so we thought we would come along and spend an evening here with the kids.

"It's good to see. My son was quite interested in things like this."

Alfie Bates, 12, was on holiday with his parents from London.

He said: "I found it quite impressive. I've been a few times before and I like watching it.

"We got quite excited when we heard it was on."

This year is the final year the Coastguard helicopter will feature in the display as it is being relocated.

Organiser Teresa Drage said: "This is my brother and I's first year as fundraising chairmen.

"We've lived here all our lives and it's nice to give something back to something local.

"I'm definitely very pleased with the weather and it's good to see so many people enjoying themselves and supporting the life boats."

Weymouth RNLI Week continues with a similar demonstration at Bowleaze Cove on Thursday July 28 - an event not to be missed.
