A CANOEIST was rescued from the water off Studland.

The coastguard said that at around 3.40am this morning Swanage Coastguard team was called to a report of a person shouting for help in the water off Studland.

Two young men had been on the beach when they heard cries for help and called the emergency services.

On arrival, the coastguard found the two men and a 27-year-old man on the shore line who had been in the water for “some time”.

Poole RNLI inshore lifeboat had been launched to conduct a search.

The coastguard team gave immediate first aid to the man who had been in a canoe before it had sank.

The man was said to be very hypothermic and an ambulance was requested.

The lifeboat landed on the beach to pick him up and get him to the ambulance which was waiting at North Haven by the Chain Ferry.

The coastguard said that the actions of the two men reporting the incident as well as the actions of themselves and the RNLI crew could have seen the incident turn out very differently.
