THERE'S nothing like a long walk along our Jurassic Coast to take in the beautiful views - and why not raise money for charity while doing it?

That's exactly what three men from Weymouth did to raise funds for two causes close to their hearts.

Ross Browning, Grahame Beckwith and Ivor Galliot took on the 32-mile challenge to walk from Swanage to Weymouth, taking them just over 13 hours.

Ross said: "Grahame decided he wanted to do it to raise funds for GIFTuk and I thought it would be great to do it for Soul Food, as did Ivor.

"I've got a similar history to a lot of people at Soul Food and being homeless. They helped and supported me a lot in the past and I wanted to give something back as they rely on donations.

"People get mixed ideas about Soul Food and think it's for just addicts, but it's not. We have ex-forces and mothers who are stuck waiting to be housed. We feed people and let them take a shower. They do so much at Soul Food."

Ross, who volunteers at Soul Food in Weymouth and at the Amy Winehouse Resilience Programme in Bournemouth, has so far raised more than £250.

He added: "We practised on a few walks but they were only about 12 miles at a time. We weren't expecting that amount of hills. The last six miles were a bit of a struggle but we just kept pushing each other."

Grahame said: "My younger sister Carrie suffers from a condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a genetic condition which affects her joints causing them to dislocate many times a day so I am raising money for GIFTuk, which supports patients with gastroparesis and intestinal failure.

"Carries condition reduces her mobility and causes her constant pain. She also has Postural Tachycardia Syndrome which makes her blood pressure drop suddenly. Another recent complication has meant her neck has become so weak it cannot support the weight of her head causing her brain stem to be crushed.

"On top of all this Carrie has to be fed through a tube due to another condition called Gastroparesis. Due to all these issues Carrie is no longer able to use her manual wheelchair and so a Dragonmobility powered wheelchair is needed, costing £22,000. "

A raffle is being held at Café Nero on Saturday, September 3. Grahame is also hosting a raffle and is turning to businesses in the town to donate prizes.
