NEIGHBOURS have spoken of their shock after a garage was set alight in an arson attack.
Police are investigating after the blaze on Monday night in Vespasian Way, Dorchester
Firefighters rushed to the scene shortly after 10pm and called Dorset Police
It took crews about an hour to tackle the fire in an integral garage, and thankfully, nobody was injured.
Evelyn Toogood, 85, is one of the neighbours and her house is connected to the garage.
She said: "We could hear banging and popping.
"It must have been about 10.30pm and it was lucky I hadn't gone to bed.
"I saw a light and realised it wasn't a car's headlamps because I could see it flashing.
"When I looked out, it was massive.
"It was quite frightening at the time because I was thinking about my car and my house.
"I don't drive very far but to me, that car's worth a lot."
One neighbour, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he had heard the fire engines in the road on Monday night.
He said: “I didn’t realise how bad the damage was until I saw it this morning. I hope everyone is okay.
"To find out that it could be arson is disgusting. People need to have more respect.
"If this is the case I hope the police catch the person or people involved.”
In the past month there have been a series of arson attacks in Dorchester and Portland.
Yesterday, the Echo reported another arson attack in Dorchester on Cambridge Road after a caravan was set on fire on Friday, August 19 with two men inside.
Mayor of Dorchester, Cllr Tim Harries said: "It's very disturbing – two incidents in a week. Let's hope the perpetrators are caught sooner rather than later.
"It's an extremely careless thing to do and so reckless."
A spokesman for Dorset Police confirmed no arrests have been made. Anyone with information should contact the police on 101.
The homeowners could not be reached for comments.
